Hello Teresa and Hazel,

First of all let me say that there has not been a county of Avon since April
1st.1996!!!

The County of Avon no longer exists; it was dissolved into four _unitary
authorities_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unitary_authority) as a result of the
_Local Government Act 1992_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Local_Government_Act_1992&action=edit) and the Avon (Structural Change) Order 1995
on _April 1_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_1) , _1996_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996) .
The demise of the County of Avon was the focus of a documentary called "The
End of Avon" by the BBC produced by _Linda Orr_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Linda_Orr&action=edit) and _Michael Lund_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Lund) broadcast in _1996_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996) .
The four authorities replacing _Avon_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avon)
were The City and County of _Bristol_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol) ,
_South Gloucestershire_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Gloucestershire)
(formerly _Kingswood_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingswood,_South_Gloucestershire) and _Northavon_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northavon) ), _North
Somerset_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Somerset) (formerly
_Woodspring_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodspring) ) and _Bath and North East
Somerset_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bath_and_North_East_Somerset) (formerly
_Bath_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bath) and _Wansdyke_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wansdyke) ). >>>
Put simply and without digging up tons of dates etc Bristol was at one time
partly in Gloucestershire and partly in Somerset. Then it became a county in
it's own right. Then in 1974 it was included in the ill fated County O Avon
(Ugh!!!). Then, as above, Avon was disolved in 1996 (Hooray). Those are the
very basic facts.
Regards,
David Ware.
