He may have been illegitimate. It's happened in the family before and
since. We've always been a randy bunch.
But I rather suspect you may have found his real mother. This may be
why we have never been able to find a scrap of information on Mary Ann
Sherman. I have been using my late mother's decades of research as the
basis for my family tree but there is no indication where this woman's
name came from.
Perhaps Mary Ann Sherman was his married sister and not his mother??
Everything else fits, E.V. Dowling's birth date, birth place, and the
fact that when he came to North America he made his living as a
carpenter.
But what I am having trouble grasping is the Chamberlain family
connection. If Daniel Dowling, born 1781, is the father in law, where
was Hannah Dowling Chamberlain, born 1817, and her sisters Hester b.
1815 and Mary A. B 1813, in the 1841 census?
Thanks for all of your help,
Paul
