Hello Lois,

I wouldn't myself bother very much about recent changes in county
administration (unless you are really interested in such things!).
Until the end of the 19th century the historic counties remained much as
they had done for hundreds of years, and it wasn't until 1972 that major
changes started to happen. Almost all of the parish registers are
located in the historic counties record offices, whatever happened to
the administration. However, during the centuries some villages and
town have been moved from one historic county to another, and it's worth
checking up on this, and where the records are, or you could waste a lot
of time. Most people use Genuki

http://www.genuki.org.uk/

for this kind of information.

The Somerset County Archives are at Taunton, which is a very pleasant
town with good rail services. Rail travel is expensive and not terribly
convenient, and you might find it more convenient to hire a car.

You can buy copies of the parish registers from the Record Office on
microfiche, so if you have access to a fiche reader, it might be
something to consider.

In an effort to help, I looked for your Frederick Jerred in the GRO
index on Findmypast.com, formerly 1837on-line. He seems to be there as
Fred Jerret, Axbridge X 353 in the April-May-June quarter of 1851.
(Axbridge is in Somerset, about 20 miles northwest of Taunton). You
could use this reference to get a copy birth certificate from the GRO:
this will tell you where he was born, and confirm his mother's maiden
name, etc. If you haven't got a copy of this certificate, it really
would be worth getting, only £7 from the GRO, and you can do it on-line at

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

I don't have any Jarrets/Jerrets etc in my own tree, but I'm familiar
with the name as there are plenty in south Warwickshire where many of my
ancestors come from, and there is a tremendous variation in this name,
and you will Jarrets, Jerrets, Jerreds etc., and even some named as
Gerrets and Gerreds. Jerrets and Gerrets would be pronounced in exactly
the same way.

Derby (the county town of Derbyshire) is about 130 miles north-west of
Taunton, but would take only about 3 hours to drive there, as it's
motorway all the way. The county archives are at Matlock.

Hope this helps, and good luck.

David
