Subject: [ENG-SOM] records of land transfer 1800?
Date: Sat, 05 Jan 2008 11:36:03 -0800

Dear Listers:

I have asked similar questions before with help from kind folks.

I am wanting to travel to London [KEW] and Taunton [SAS] in Sept
2008. In order to do my homework I am trying to understand where
/how I might view land records/deeds from 1750-1835?

I have a Tithe map and apportionments for Stoke Trister/Bayford
[1835] with our ancestor William Stacey as owner of many acres as
well as occupier of Uriah Messiters' lands at Bayford Lodge.

I did a A2A search and find that I can likely find William Stacey as
renter at Phelips lands at Stoke Trister [manorial lands]. But I am
more interested in the lands he OWNED and how to determine when
ownership began or ended.

I have his WILL of 1840 where he mentions the following:
LEIGH FARM which appears to agree with 1835 Tithe maps.
HUNTERS LODGE at Lye Common Penselwood. which may have been
previously owned by his mother Mary Stacey on Tithe map.?
Unfortunately, there do not appear to be WILLS for Mary Stacey or for
her husband Benjamin Stacey.

I would appreciate someone who has worked with land records to share
their experiences with me, especially older records.

Another question: how did some lands become owned by smaller farmers
and many lands appear to be owned by large landowners/manors?

thanks Liz of BC Canada
