Thanks to Ian, Chariani, James, Marion, Glenys, gardenman, Patrick and
all those who assisted me chase along the meandering trail of
ancestors. With their help my brick wall crumbled a little. Here were
my questions and now my successes.
Original email:
> I would appreciate any suggestions on how to locate the death
> records of my g grandfather. I have the following information about
> him. Because Perry is such a common name his death record may be a
> the key to locating many of his children of which there were eight.
>
> HENRY PERRY
> DOB: 22 August 1841, Isle Brewers, Somerset
> Mother's maiden name: Jane Paul
> Father's name:John Perry
> 1867- 1881? served with 2nd Battalion, 8th King's Regiment of Foot
> Discharged as Sergeant Major due to health problems.

Henry was thought to be alive in 1905 but that was erroneous and
looking tin the wrong direction. He died in 1893. With his death
certificate identified I could identify the location of his son Henry
John.
A suggested review of his army records turned up two brothers William
and James Roger in barracks in Lancashire.
Further searching provided the death certificates and information on
Jane Perry, his mother, and James Roger Perry his brother. I have
located William's family. He ended up in Chester, Lancashire/ Cheshire
and is on the 1881 census but not found after that. Perhaps searching
the deaths with about 3 years may uncover William. The men in his
family seemed to all die in their late forties or early fifties.

> .CHILDREN: Henry John, Mary Jane, Sydney Thomas, Arthur Walter,
> 1881 in Chester, Cheshire
> DIED: ?
> As above Henry John has been located. Leads have been offered for
> Mary Jane, Arthur Walter and Henry Senior's wife Sarah Jane. That is
> my next line or research.

>
> They moved around a great deal and may have been in Tiverton or
> London. My grandfather refused to provide any details of his family
> so there is no help there. I don't know when he died or where but he
> was alive until at least 1905. I have had no luck finding him in
> the 1900 Census records.
>
Next step: trying to locate Henry's brother George, baptized Isle
Brewers, 1839. Family history is not always what it seems and this
entire exercise was a reminder to not trust oral family history. Still
the next bit is looking for a "Police Chief" in Tiverton. Thanks to
the lesson learned I will search for any policeman.

Once again help from the SOmerset List has been invaluable!
