Hello All

Goodness me, when I picked up my mail today it was like a stampede, all
those subscribe messages! Thanks for joining the list.

This is an abridged version of the introductory message that I have already
posted
(Apologies if you have already seen this!) and the message which Steve Jones
kindly posted to the Eng-Sry List.

I was recently approached by someone who is a member of the
West Surrey Family History Society, but who lives out of the County,
who had set up a mailing list that was aimed at the out of County West
Surrey members. Now this person has since found that they are not able to
continue with the list and asked me if I would take over.

I have agreed, as I think that being unable to attend meetings and be active
within the Society you can be a bit isolated, I know I certainly miss
involvement with the Society now I live in the South West of England.
This can be my contribution to the Society!

The point of the list was to have a list that focused on the out of County
members of the WSFHS, to act as a discussion forum and as a way of
passing on information to subscribed members between journals, such as
open days and publications etc. Let the list become an extension of the
Society; where we out of County members can "get together in cyber space"
in the same way other members can, when they attend meetings. This does not
of course
exclude member of the Society who live within travelling distance of any
meetings.

This list DOES NOT replace the Eng-Surrey List ran by Steve Jones, but is to
exist along side the Eng Surrey list. I am happy for people to post their
surname Interests, but what I don't want to happen is for subscribers to
replace
Steve's list with this one. I see this as a sort of "let your hair down"
kind of list,
giving us the chance to talk, just as we would do if we were able to attend
a WSFHS
meeting, you know the kind of chatter over a cuppa and a biscuit!

Rules: Well, being an former Civil Servant, I don't like rules, but, and
there is always one! Please no flaming, or shouting, but please send any
surnames in
capitals, it makes it much easier to read. Please NO virus messages.
This is YOUR list, a chance to "natter" and I hope we can treat each other
just the way
we all want to be treated. I know that sometimes it is
difficult to express something via email compared with face to face.

Personally, there was probably no particular need for such a list, BUT it
has been created and with reflection there is great potential for such a
list and I think it can be of use to us a genealogists and members of the
Society.

I joined the WSFHS in the Mid 1980s and have maintained my membership since
then, the only difference being a name change in the early 1990s. The vast
majority
of my research is Surrey, and then just over the border into Hampshire and
Sussex.

Anyway, enough of my rambling. Lets enjoy the list and getting to "know"
each other
and if anyone has any problems then do email me. In the meanwhile If there
are any
questions or suggestions feel free to send them via the list and get the
discussions/chat underway.

Regards,

Julie Goucher
