Hello Eileen,
I suggest that you check out the website
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/index.html as this gives information
on many workhouses all over the country.
It also provides information on the known repositories for archived
documents.
You may also wish to consider joining the Workhouses/Hospital Mailing List
on RootsWeb. Do the usual to ""
(for the digest version) or "" for
the list version.
Regards,

Hello Listers
One of my Grandmother's sisters was born in Godalming 1883 -
near Guildford. The little mite was dropped head first into a coal
scuttle, resulting in brain damage. She was placed in an institution.
No one later knew what became of her.
Possible institutions may be:
workhouses at Guildford, Chertsea, Kingston & an asylum at Caterham.
(There are others, but thought these the more likely from the little I know)
Where would records exist for these institutions - if available?
Do these places still exist today, perhaps under another name?
