Hello listers,

I'm back after several months away but instead of beginning with my own
requests I've decided to list the names in photocopies from three Surrey
newspapers of the first week of January 1903, leaving my own 'story' till
last. Some of the reports are incomplete as they were printed from a
broadsheet newspaper onto A4 paper. I'll try to extract names even if only
from half a column as they may be of help to someone. This is going to be a
rather long job! The reports cover council meetings, crimes, funerals,
Christmas parties for children and old folks, plays and pantomimes, football
matches etc

This first list (one of several) is taken from the Woking Herald of Saturday
3rd Jan 1903 and is a full column report (my version incomplete) of the
parish council. I will list the names and indicate where I can add 'more'
not mentioned in this report. I can in a very few cases give a few more
details from the report itself which might help to establish whether the
person mentioned is one you are looking for.

The Parish Council:
Mr M.Rose replaced Mr H.E. Carter at Old Woking
Mr W.C. Lovell replaced Mr G.Cobbett
Mr J.Kittredge (more) & Mr G. Harris re-elected at Knaphill & St Johns
Messrs Weston & Bayliss replaced Messrs Cox, Martin & Hutton at Woking
Station

Coronation Committee:
Mr G.Harris (Chairman)
Mr J.P.Asher (Secretary)
Mr W.Herbage (Treasurer)
Mr G.J.Woodridge (Chairman of the Finance Committee)

The Vicar, the Rev.Percy Phillips, left to go to Ottershaw
Mr Bernthal, Nonconformist, 'an able local preacher', also left.

You might be interested to know the following, it being 'that' time of
year.now a hundred years later:
"The rates have been fixed at 2s 1d in Woking Station, 2s. at Old Woking, St
Johns and Knaphill, and 1s. at Sutton."
(So Woking Station was a district, not just the station itself) Before you
think how lucky they were, remember that the Fire Brigade (lots more to come
on this) was voluntary and the school finance was rather differently
managed:

"Now as to the School Board, the members of which have during their year
discharged their onerous duties ably and conscientiously even in the face of
ultimate extinction. Perhaps the most important matter dealt with by the
local education authority was the endeavour to make the people of Horsell
pay for the education of the Horsell children who attended the Knaphill
School. The Horsell managers endeavoured to raise subscriptions for the
purpose of the contribution, but failed to receive sufficient support.
Therefore the children referred to are excluded from the school."

My father and his brothers and sisters attended this school at Knaphill and
I will be making a photo of the teachers and parents from the late 1890s
available besides much more on Woking and St Johns over the next few weeks
on my website. Woking has not been covered yet but there are stories and
details of family and other people around Guildford and Lambeth. For a list
of family names go to www.lupton2.freeserve.co.uk/history/ancestors.htm or
for 'stories' go to <history.htm> There is also a photo of WW1 soldiers on
sick leave at Imtarfa Military Hospital in Malta in January 1918 with names,
regiments and ranks. They come from all over the country and only one is
known to me so I would be very interested to find out anything about any of
the others.

Coming next - 'The criminals of 1903' : Driving without lights - with a pony
and cart, Theft of Lamps, and an argument about naming of streets (ending in
a brawl)

Happy hunting,
Barbara Lupton
