When my husbands Great Grandfather died, his wife had his medals buried with him. Could be that others did the same thing and that's why the medals can't be found now.

I was just talking to my wife about the same thing, would I be able to get
my grandfathers full set of medals? I remember there being others, with
ribbons, but I'm not sure if they were my grandfathers or my father's, who
fought in WW11. Whose ever they were, they've gone missing.
