Dear Listers
For those of you who live in or near London or plan on visiting soon you
must visit the Museum in Docklands, which opened on the 24 May 2003.
It is located at No 1 Warehouse, West India Dock, Hertsmere Road, E14
4AL. Tel 0870 444 3856.
e-mail:
or www.museumindocklands.org.uk
The Museum in Docklands is part of the Museum of London Group.
It is open 7 days from 10am - 6pm. Last admission 5.30pm
Admission: 5 Adult, 3 Concessions, Children Free.
All tickets valid for 1 year
Getting to the Museum
By Docklands Light Railway to West India Quay
By Tube to Canary Wharf
By Bus 277, D3, D6, D7, D8, 115
The museum is in a 3 storey Victorian warehouse and fully equipped with
lifts and all modern conveniences.
There is a Museum Shop, Coffee Stop and Restaurant.
There are plenty of other bars and restaurants on the Quay.
I am not connected to the Museum in any way but would highly recommend
it for those interested in the docks or the Thames. The displays are
superb and cover the history of the Thames and those who have worked on
it right up to the present.
For those interested in research there is an archive and library, which
can be visited by appointment on Tuesday and Wednesday from 2.00pm to
6.00pm.
To make an appointment contact the librarian Bob Aspinall on 020 7001
9825 or by e-mail
There are a range of events throughout May - August such as museum
tours, walks, archive investigations etc.
My own interest in the Docklands is that my g-g-grandfather William Read
was the Dock Master of West India Dock in the 1880's. I wonder what he
would make of his dock now if he could return, and see the huge towers
growing out of it.
I hope many of you will be able to visit the museum, you will not be
disappointed.
Best wishes
