Hi All,

Just in case you've wondered what kind of information is actually in such and such a record (as I often do :)) I've inlcluded the transcript of the complete entry for John FLEMING form 6309/1. I'd really appreciate some help to get a fuller understanding of the record.

LDS #1067073 item 4
MS 6309/1
Register of Barge Owners 1860 - 1890
Indexed.

(The spine actually says 1859...)

#226 p. 46
/ John Fleming "Dead - no widow - craft sold"
[under this] Brooks, Henry Truitt, Terry Lane, Old Brentford/ Hope 63 open barge 9/8/1872}/
/ No 24 Hanover St, Rye Lane, Peckham
No 2 St Paul's Terrace, Brockley Rd, New Cross /
/Arthur 60_Isabella 60_John [tear in paper], George & Mary 60_Catherine_52 Deck'd Barges 2/2/1861 Isabella 45 open barge 21/21/1865 /

[The whole entry has been crossed out but for the information regarding BROOKS]
~~~~~~~~
John Fleming and his wife both died in 1868.
--- Does the 60 with "George & Mary" refer to tonnage?
--- Are the dates following some barges purchase/acquisition dates?
--- Barges are frequently crossed out presumably this means they're no longer with this owner. Was it possible to have more than one barge in the industry with the same name?
I also have transcripts of entries for Robert JOHNSON of 124 Jamaica Rd, Bermondsey and Edward CHAPMAN of 181 Tooley St, Sthwk if anyone would like them (they were busy lads!)
Many thanks
Ruth Rathbone
