Hi listers, more Tamworth history from the Tamworth Herald 29 September 1951:-
"Tamworth Borough Council has accepted the decision of its Finance and General Peuposes Committee that no further action should be taken to acquire the Warwickshire Moor for the town. Alderman T.H.Sutton said that members were aware of the difficulties which faced the council in trying to acquire the Staffordshire Moor some years ago. It was now felt that the capital cost involved and the expence of maintaining the moor would be far greater than any benefits the public might derive from the full use of the moor."
"All hopes that a Castle Museum painting, 'The Raising of Lazarus', was the work of Rembrandt has been dispelled. In order to test the theory, a photograph of the picture, part of the Alkin collection donated to the town in 1923, was submitted to the National Gallery in London. Back came a letter from the Assistant Keeper stating that the picture, which has long been attributed to the Dutch master, could probably be 17th century work, influenced by Dutch and Italian artists, but was hardly a painting of any consequence. The Library and Museum Committee recommended that a valuation of the painting be made. Councillor E.A.Courts said he only hoped it was a Rembrandt and tehn they could sell it and help pay for public conveniences in the town."
"Mr Edgar Riley(41) was on Tuesday appointed headmaster of Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Tamworth. He succeeds Mr W.E.Summerhays, who was appointed to the headship following the departure of Mr Alan Dale."
"Mr Earnest Dudley, famous as 'The Armchair Detective', is to give a talk at Tamworth Town Hall on Monday on 'Crime Fiction' ".
"For the first time in the 30 years of its existence, Wilnecote Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade has its own headquarters. A wooden sectional hut on brick foundations in the Ninefoot recreation ground, its erection was financed by donations, including those from Wilnecote WMC and the local Produce Association."
"In view of rising costs, the price of main meals at the Civic Restaurant have increased from 1s 6d to 1s 8d." (Mick's note: in todays money value = 7½ pence to 8½ pence).
There are a few names I hope will be helpful to someone, regards Mick McAllister
