HI Zoe
this is a bit long ,but may give you and listers some hope!!.
Although your message is to b,ham list ,we presume that it is the area you
wish searched ,if not a area mentined would help ,also there are quite a few
good people out there on the list .that can help ,you themselves ,if they so
wished ,try that first with what you know of your ancestors ,and progress
along that path ,until you reach a point (after having proven those found so
far to be correct, no ( "it fits scenarios", prove it!) then go to the
expense of a good local researcher to your area, then if no luck try a
professional researcher, there are big differences in them ,whereas locals
ones may be just that ,in those areas and have a very good knowledge of the
local scene, but who are not so adept at the whole range of records for that
area ,and of how to find and search them in a cost effective way with a
reasonable cost to you ,rather than stumbling from post to pillar!!.or is
the other way round (I think i know every lampost on the way home by now
!!!)
The best are very good ,may be expensive, but can do more in terms of finding
them and of correctly putting them together in trees etc .
The best and quickest are those professionals who are what are called
genealogical researchers ,virtually all these have Ma,s BA,s you name it in
this particular field ,which also includes social history, etc , and do know
what they are doing ,so one of these in your area of research with local
knowledge or speciality in that area ,can turn around a search very quickly.
The very best are dear ,those that work on a national basis anywhere more so
,but then again they sub-contract the work to the best local ones if
pushed, its like saying "i do not know dick about timbuctoo, but a local one
does ". but he also verifies what comes back .
Now the very best and quickest have got to be the cream of the professionals
that work in the tracing of wills and those in probate and intestate
cases, they can trace all people back and forward(very hard that) from a
known name 80 or more years ago ,back to early 1800,s to to present day i a
twinkling of the eye , maybe because they can access records we cannot for
legal reasons, i have had dealings with them in the past ,and i am forever
trying to get their secrets out of them how they do this , one case
,involved my wifes side ,out of the blue it came ,the person only died 5
months ago (2000) and in that time traced no fewer than 67 people related to
that person ,and gave that persons history back to 1832 ,and forward to
date, and thats without finding , them all over the globe!!, I myself have
gone through it myself on what records i can access,i mean they even named
all our children and family ,and their children, amazing really, and I have
took it back farther than they have from their findings.
Records that are closed to us are open to others for various reasons .
I have come across this bit before ,and it states that they the Gov have
records of all people born in family linages, since 1837.
I am open to debate on that, but try and get a official answer from the GOV.
how many Tv programes have you saw (well you know some are cock and bull )
where the detectives pick up a phone and ,mutter a bit and a bit later the
phone rings ,"gov that suspect is related to that ****.!!,you know what i
mean!!.
I rest my case , the garden calls!!, or is it my wife!!.
