Hi Marlene,

Thank you for replying to my posting.

My grandfather's marriage certificate has his father's occupation as Cabinet
Maker but I cannot find any of those in Birmingham!

The problem is that I have a niggling feeling that neither my grandfather
nor his family originated from Birmingham as I think if he had, he would have
been living with his family at the time of his wedding and not staying with his
future parents in law. The witnesses at his wedding were two members of the
bride's family. The only possible family I have found on the 1881 census was
in Bengeworth, Worcs, and William Vale there was a carpenter. I have some
family photos, but none gives any clues. My father's sister died some years
ago and there were no children.

I thought I might be able to trace my grandfather's date and place of birth
through my father's Home Guard records, but they only state that his parents
were British.

See what I am up against - no living relatives whom I know about and no
family papers and photos giving any clues.

I managed to trace my grandmother's family through an article I wrote to the
Birmingham Family History Magazine - Midland Ancestor so I have her side
now. I have also tried exploring to see if her siblings descendants could be
contacted to see if they new anything.

I think I might have to wait now until the 1910 census comes out to see if
my grandfather is on that and this should give his date and place of birth.

Thanks again for your help.

Margaret
