Subject: [B'ham] 1861 conundrum!

Hi everyone

Wonder if someone could cast some experienced eyes over the following
problems and shed any light on possible scenarios?

In 1851 George Wragg , provisions dealer age 42 was living with his
wife Ann age 37 at 161 Livery St, with children Job age 13, Alfred
12, Samuel 6, Ann 4, Mary 2 and Elizabeth 1 month.

1. They also had a daughter Selina chr in 1849 who doesn't appear on
either the 1851 or 1861, but is on 1871 age 21, and on 1881 age 31
etc. Where was she in the 1851-61 census'?

2. Main problem though is with her parents....George Wragg is shown
as a publican living by himself at the White ? in Aston Deritend/
Bordesley. He is registered blind on the census return. There are
no staff with him or any family members.
Meanwhile back in Livery St is Ann M Wragg age 45 described as the
head and a provisions dealer, living with children Alfred 22, george
8 and Solomon 3. Elizabeth the daughter could be in the Asylum as
she must have had some problems as provision was made for her in her
fathers will when he died in 1890. However, I can find no trace of
Job who would be about 24 and married to Eleanor, or Samuel from whom
I am descended .

By 1871 there is no trace of Ann Maria and I have exhausted all
avenues in trying to find her death between 1861-71, so am wondering
if she left the family home and was at an institution or living with
someone else and adopting their name for respectability.....

In 1871, George Wragg senior is back as a provisions dealer this time
in Aston, with childrenGeorge 18, Selina 21 and Solomon 13......

Where did Selina, Job and Samuel disappear to in 1861 -surely it's a
bit of a coincidence that all of them are omitted from the census esp
as Job was married by then and presumably living separately. Selina
would only be 12.....where is she? ...Samuel would be btwn 16-20
yrs old.....

Any thoughts much appreciated!

best wishes

Sally
