Hello Margaret, I have a series of books called "The Little Guides" pub.
by Methuen around the 1920's. The one for Cumberland & Westmorland has a
description of CROSTHWAITE with LYTH.
(I think its all one place ) .........."Crosthwaite with Lyth is 5 miles
west of KENDAL station, a considerable parish, formerly a chapelry of
Heversham, in a district noted for its agricultural excellence. The district
received the rights of sepulture in 1556, after a petition to the Bishop of
Chester stating that the distance to the parish church was too great to take
their dead for burial, and for the regular attendance at worship, but it was
not made a separate parish until 1869. The old church (St. Mary's) was
several times rebuilt, the last occasion in 1879, with the tower added
later. It is a handsome gothic structure with a peal of 6 bells. There are
extensive mosses or peat beds in the parish on which the local farmers have
rights of turbary, a common priviledge in many Cumberland & Westmorland
parishes, but not now greatly used."
Hope this helps to conjure up a picture of this village. The book was
written by Daniel Scott of Penrith, in 1915, but because of the war wasn't
published till 1920. Best wishes, Gen.

Thanks Mike.
Thomas VARTY was indeed born in Crosthwaite and Lyth. I thought it might be
a known place in that area that I'm not familiar with - being one who is
struggling to come to terms with the geography of the North Lancs /
Westmorland border - now Cumbria.
I have found Crosthwaite on my map but not Lyth. Was / is this a place -
anyone?
