Hi Kerry

me again, The mountains are called fells and the fellside
villages nestle at the foot starting really in Cumberland at
Castle Carrock near Brampton and coming down (southwards) thro.
Cumrew Newbiggin, Croglin Renwick, Melmerby, Ousby and Skirwith,
Kirkland, Blencarn. entering Westmorland here at Milburn, Knock,
Dufton, Longmarton and Brampton, Keisley. fiinally Hilton and
Murton.

they stretch in a string for 30 miles many of these families were
farmers and such but many were also miners.

The Varty's were also numerous over the fell at Alston and
families intermarried over the fell too. One reason being the
sheep which used the fell for grazing tended by people from both
sides. Another being that many mines were on the mountain too.

About 4 miles from Penrith on the Alston road is Langwathby with
its neighbouring village of Edenhall many Varty people lived
here.

I would like to correspond with anyone who is researching the
Varty name
from around this area. What do you mean by fellside area? Never
hear of
that before. My John Varty married Mary Robinson in the Parish
of
Kirkbythore in 1776 and they lived in Long Marton where John was
a
Shoemaker. I believe that Mary's parents were William Robinson
and Margaret
Furnass. Look forward to hearing from others who may be
researching these
