Hi Susan and Nigel
I am also researching Thompsons in Kendal. My research so far, subject to
confirmation in April from another researcher, is as follows:
I found a JOHN THOMPSON, b c1744, married to ISABELLA TROUGHTON.
I did not follow this line. I traced the following:
WILLIAM THOMPSON, christened 5 April 1740 (from births and christenings,C of
E Parish Church of Kendal, 1679-1835); married MARGARET TROUGHTON, chr. 20
Jan. 1745 (b/c C of E Holy Trinity, 1679-1835); married 5 November 1765,
banns at Holy Trinity Church, 20, 27 Oct., 3 Nov. 1765.
They had a large family, of which one was
WILLIAM, chr 14 Sept. 1783, C of E Parish Church of Kendal 1679-1835;
married AGNES DODGSON, chr 27 May 1787; married 2 May 1803, Parish Church
records, banns 17, 24 April and 1 May 1803.
I did not find a child ANTHONY from this marriage but that is not to say
there was not one. I found
WILLIAM, born 6 Feb. 1805
ROBERT and THOMAS (twins) born 10 Oct. 1807
MARY ANN, born 30 July 1811.
My husband, DEREK, continues down the line of ROBERT.
On the 1851 census I found the ANTHONY THOMPSON, 30 yrs (born abt 1821),
hand-loom weaver, of Far Cross Bank; wife JANE, 31 yrs.
Children:
WILLIAM, 8 yrs, scholar
ELIZABETH, 6 yrs, scholar
JOHN, 4 yrs
AGNES, 1 yr.
Their christening dates are in Parish Church records 1835-1901.
They could have moved out of the Kendal area because I did not find them on
the later Kendal census papers that I have.
I found a JOHN THOMPSON, born 14 Feb. 1852, son of MILES THOMPSON, labourer;
mother ISABELLA.
His occupation was stone mason, he married SARAH ANN BOSWICK, 4 Oct. 1873,
at the Holy Trinity Church, Kendal; her father was JOHN BOSWICK.
This information was in the Parish Records 1862-1907.
Could this be your family?
Hope this helps and does not cause confusion. I shall look forward to your
reply.
NITA THOMPSON
