Hi Kristi,

The name Lancelot STEELE rang a bell. I am researching Dixon in
Westmorland. I have a Lancelot Steele DIXON, bap 18 Aug 1844 at
Burneside (just on northern end of Kendal). He was the son of James
Dixon and Elizabeth STEELE. They married 27 Dec 1837 (per Jack Dixon).
The 1881 census shows Elizabeth born Appleby c1808. The 1851 census
gives Bongate as place of birth. Bongate is one of the two parishes of
Appleby, Westmoreland's former county town. Elizabeth may possibly be
the daughter of your Lancelot and Elizabeth Steele.

1851 census has following details of Lancelot: -

HO107/2441 Folio 376 page 18

Strickland Kettle

No 73 Garnett Head
Lancelot STEELE HM 66 Farmer of 188 acres WES Bongate
Elizabeth STEELE WM 66 WES Bongate
William STEELE SU 36 WES Bongate
Ann STEELE DU 31 WES Kendal
Sarah Ann STEELE G-D 9 Scholar WES Kendal
Fletcher SILL Serv U 22 Farm servant WES Kendal
George FOX Serv U 17 Farm servant WES Kendal
Agnes SLATER Serv U 16 House servant Lan Lancaster

You need to check the Bongate registers for a marriage of
Lancelot and Elizabeth probably between 1800 and 1810 to find the maiden
name of Elizabeth.

If I can help further let me know, have copies of 1851 census for most
of Westmorland plus 1881 census.

Good luck

Mike Dixon
