Ambleside Petty Sessions

John Nicholson charged with permitting drunkenness on a licensed premise.
Evidence from previous case considered.
Fine: three pounds plus 13s 6d costs.

Previous case was reported on same page in which Micheal Benson & Wm. Bell both of
Troutbeck were charged with being drunk at the Traveller's Rest, Kirkstone on Tuesday Nov.
30. The Annual Shepherd's meet was held that day.
Giving evidence was Elijah Nicholson, son of the proprietor of Traveller's Rest - he saw
Benson and Bell there.
others mentioned: Mr. F.W. Watson, solicitor, Kendal to defend
Mr. Jeremiah Coward, wittness for defence
Mr. Hodgson of Hartsop Hotel
Mr. J. Birkett Forest of Troutbeck, farmer
Mr. William Woodend of Nook End, Ambleside
Convicted both fined 5s plus 8s 6d costs.

to stray on Kirkstone Road on 7th inst.
Defendant's grandson appeared
Fine 10s plus 7s 6d cost.


On the topic of licensed premises the following from issue 128 (01-Sep-1882) Page 4

Licences were renewed to all licensed victuallers under the Ambleside division and
comprised 33 alehouses, 8 beerhouses, 5 sweets licences, 2 for sale of wine and 3 for
drink to be sold off premises. The only comment against any landlord was of Mr. Foster of
the Bay Horse, Winster having been fined 6s on 6 Sept. for allowing drunkenness.
