The Cumbria FHS ( http://cumbriafhs.com )does not do research as such,
though some of its members may provide assistance, but they do publish some
information which is mainly but not limited to the 1851 census, full details
on their site.
Once you have exhausted the IGI and FreeBMD then, apart from scouring the
net and the various other sources, you are left with the records in the
Cumbria Archive, the records for most of Westmorland being in Kendal. They
do research work on a paid basis. You can get to them at
http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/archives/
You can search the IGI in different ways, which can sometimes reveal a
connection that you did not know was there, for example looking at locations
rather than individuals.
How far back is further back?
Best wishes
John

Subject: [WES] Parish records
Hi,
Can anyone give me advice on where I write to in order to locate parish
baptisms, marriages and burials from the old county of Westmorland.
Family historyonline has nothing for Westmorland and I think I've exhausted
the IGIs as well! I found a FHS but couldn't figure out if they did postal
searches.
It's the only way I'm going to trace the TROUGHTON branch of my family any
further back.
I'll be grateful for any help.
Jill.
