Welcome to the list.
This is a tricky one as records are not generally available until before
1901.
It is quite possible you are quite correct about Clarice going home for the
birth.
Surprisingly the 1901 census only comes up with one family at Levens (Near
Kendal) which is Annie and John Nicholls with daughters Annie and Lucie.
There are two Clarice Nicholls in the 1901 census:

The one aged 22 is unlikely as she would be 51 by 1930 but the younger one
is a possibility

I have not checked the records which can be checked at
http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ for a small fee, but it is
possible these two are related, the record would show if they are living at
the same place.

It's a long shot but you could look also for Clarice daughter of Annie and
John.

Normally the next step would be to look back from the birth date of Muriel
until you found the marriage of Clarice and then get her age to help you
find the birth. But if not married then you have a problem.

Bear in mind that not everyone found their way into the census, I have
several relatives I know existed but seem to have escaped the census taker
one way or another.

Of course Clarice may not have been born in 1901, in which case you are
faced with either searching the records from the indexes, a massive task, or
trying to locate some other snippet that will steer you in the right
direction. Again a long shot but you could try the records of the
Westmorland Gazette in case there was a birth announcement but if she was
not married then that is unlikely.

your relatives.

I am a new subscriber.

I am interested in Nicholls.
My mother, MURIEL MARGARET NICHOLLS, birth certicate has place of birth
as Westmorland
General Hospital.
date of birth is November 21, 1930

Her mother is Clarice Elizabeth NICHOLLS. no father is mentioned.
Clarice's address on the birth certificate in a London address
I can only think that she might have 'gone home' or maybe as far away as
possible to have her child. I have exhausted any leads in the London area
for Nicholls so I am trying this.
