Subject: [WISBECH] Archdeacon's Transcripts "Explanation"

Hi all
Having just posted a message that I was checking the Archdeacon's Transcripts, I now will
give and explanation to what they are.
Archdeacon's Transcripts are copies of the parish registers that were collected yearly by
the Archdeacon of Norfolk. The large majority if not all are incomplete in time coverage,
but the years or time periods that do appear vary from parish to parish. The main time
periods for each parish is from either:
1) 1600-1812 for Norfolk parishes in the Archdeaconry of Norwich, which includes the
Hundred of Freebridge Marshland
2) 1725-1812 for Norfolk parishes in the Archdeaconry of Norfolk, which includes the
Hundred of Clackclose
The Fenlands page on the Wisbech and the Fenlands website list all of the parishes
surrounding Wisbech by Hundred. The URL for Wisbech and the Fenlands is found below:
http://genea-logos.bizhosting.com/wisbech/
Please note that even though the parish of Emneth is in the Hundred of Freebridge
Marshland, it is not in the Archdeaconry of Norwich. Emneth has it's own peculiar
ecclesiastical jurisdiction, so there are no Archdeacon's Transcripts.
The Archdeacon's Transcripts appear on microfilm and can be ordered and viewed at the LDS
(Morman's) Family History Centres. The Norfolk Record Office also has microfilm copies of
the Archdeacon's Transcripts.
Each microfilm of Archdeacon's Transcripts usually contains about 10 parishes. All the
parishes that lye in the county of Norfolk that are close to Wisbech are spread over about
5 microfilms of Archdeacon's Transcripts. I will be uploading soon to the resources pages
of the Wisbech and the Fenlands website a list of the parishes that occur on each
microfilm, and the time periods that are covered for each parish.
The best reason for viewing the Archdeacon's Transcripts is that you can get an idea of
the parishes that you need to examine further. From there you can then view the parish
register for any particular parish or parishes. If you cannot visit Wisbech, Cambridge of
Norwich personally and your need to order parishes records on microfilm from the LDS, then
it's a lot cheaper to hire 5 or so microfilms of Archdeacon's Transcripts then it is to
hire about 40 microfilms of parish registers.
