Subject: [WISBECH] Re Identifying a Norfolk parish
Date: Sat, 3 Apr 2004 05:59:32 EST
Hello
I am new to this list although not completely new to family history. My main
family lines are in Yorkshire and Lancashire with a few straying into other
areas in the Midlands, however I have not had any reason before now to research
in Norfolk and Cambridgeshire and am therefore a complete novice regarding the
local geography and history and would greatly appreciate any help available
from people with local knowledge.
My name interest in this area is SAVAGE.
One of my families moved to the Wisbech area sometime in the 1830's
George DARBYSHIRE, was a school teacher and I can only speculate at the
moment that he taught in Wisbech or the one of the surrounding towns or villages
during that time. He later returned to Yorkshire and I have found him there in
all the relevant censuses. However is eldest son, George Blakey DARBYSHIRE
obviously stayed behind in Wisbech and married there in 1843 to Rachel SAVAGE(age
25).
The marriage certificate tells me that he was a groom living at The Vicarage,
Wisbech St Peter and his wife (to be)was not employed, living at Lynson Road,
Wisbech. Her father is John Savage. I have subsequently found both George
and Rachel in the 1841 census in Wisbech at the same addresses.
Rachel Savage is living with a Charles and Charlotte Savage, identified as a
servant and born "not in Cambs" I am pretty sure this is the correct Rachel as
a Charles SAVAGE is one of the witnesses to her marriage. I do not know the
relationship between Charles and Rachel.
My problem arises when I have tried to find out more about Rachel's
background. In subsequent censuses, when George and Rachel are back in Yorkshire her
place of birth is variously given as
Packsfield, Norfolk in 1851
Paxfield, Norfolk in 1861, 1871 and 1881
Although I have looked at the Norfolk Genuki pages and other internet
resources and consulted Phillimores Atlas and Index of Parish Registers, I have not
been able to identify where Paxfield may be and have therefore reached a dead
end.
The only other possible relevant piece of information that I have found is a
death recorded on the NBI for a John SAVAGE(age 77) in 1830 at Wisbech St
Peter.
I would love to hear from anyone with any suggestions regarding further lines
of research or information about the location of Paxfield, or anything
relevant about the SAVAGE family.
If you have read this far I thank you for your interest and hopefully look
forward to hearing from you.
Regards
Beverley Richards
