Hi Carol,
I have HARLING's in my family tree (but from Halton/Chorley in Lancashire).
I only found them by chance on the 1901 Census under the surname HASLING and
this was only because they happened to be living next door to my
gg-grandma's mother's family! The PRO have now corrected this
mis-transcription (much to my pleasant surprise!)
I don't know if you already have Ellen's marriage cert, if not, it may be
possible that Ellen had married by the time of the 1881 Census (the youngest
age of a bride I've come across is 14) which may be why she cannot be found.
There should be somewhere local to you that has a copy of the GRO index
(Record Office / FHS / some libraries) to search the birth index (and
possibly the marriage index) to see if this yields some possibilities.
FreeBMD is not yet 100% complete so there are gaps which may not reveal your
Ellen (also look for Eleanor or Helen as possibilities). The other
possibility is that her birth was never registered.
If you think the Charles & Mary HARLING in Warwick are likely candidates,
then perhaps it may be worth looking to see if you can find them at this
address on the 1871 Census. Ellen would have been about 8 so would probably
have been living at home at this time.
Finally there is a web site an Edwy HARLING has set up
(http://freespace.virgin.net/edwy.harling/home.htm). It does list all known
researchers of the HARLING name (but the majority of researchers are looking
for HARLING's in Lancs, Yorks & Kent). There's lots of snippets of info
etc. too. You never know, you may strike lucky!
Good luck!
Karen
