Still hoping to add to the base of knowledge!
Did you have a relative who served in the Royal Field Artillery in
Worcestershire at the time of the First World War? The Second South Midland
Brigade, RFA had bases in Worcester, Malvern, Kidderminster and Redditch at
this time. In 1916 it was renamed 241 Brigade RFA and served with
distinction on the Somme, and later at Passchendaele and in Italy as part of
48th Division.
As an unofficial historian for the brigade, I am collecting as much
information as I possibly can to put together a broad picture of this period
of the Brigade's life. The present Worcester Battery has given me a lot of
support in this quest. Part funded by them and partly by myself, I have the
war diaries for the period they served in France and Flanders and this has
given me the names of over 1200 men and officers who served at this time.
My website at http://www.denniscorbett.com (look under family history
interests on page one) has a lot of information. The names of the men known
to me are listed on the following pages along with a few group pictures of
the batteries (if you can identify any of the men in these pictures, please
let me know!), some individuals and most of the graves of the Brigade's dead
in Flanders, Italy, the U.K. and France. I would like to obtain information
on Worcestershire artillery men not listed on the site. Some 2,600 men
served and I have details on about 1400 any additions would be welcome.
If you have a relative who served, whether or not he is listed on my
website, please contact me and let me know. If he is listed, I will search
my database and let you know what information I have on him. If you have a
photograph I will be pleased to include it on the site. I am also
particularly keen to see copies of any letters home, diaries, death notices
etc. that people may be able to let me see. This would help me build up a
broader picture of events surrounding the brigade at this time.
There is no charge for any searches I may make for you or information
supplied, but please may I ask that no requests should be made to look up
infantry soldiers. The Worcestershire Regiment, known to all as the
Worcesters, had no connection with the Gunners of the Worcestershire
artillery other than the fact that they served in the same, 48th Division. I
have no information on the infantry at all.
