Hi John, thanks everything seems to be falling into place now. At last. I
have no idea why I had Walter's birth down as Brierly Hill - I entered that
data about 3 years ago without entering a source (big mistake) and I have
now spent hours looking through all my Griffiths data. Walter is my Great
Great Grandfather so this line is quite important for be to trace back some
more. I have found what I assume to be Walters birth on the www.bmsgh.org
site link you gave me so I shall send for that certificate very soon, if it
is correct then I should at least get Mary's maiden name. Martha is born
before Civil registration so I will have to find a cert for a sibling - no
match yet (i was hoping the other Walter would of been on there and I could
there get two Walter certificates)

Thanks to you I now have Martha traced on the Census for 1851, 1861 and also
now in Yorkshire on the 1871, 1881 and 1891 - for the 61, 71 and 91 I have
now managed to obtain copies of the actual census record pages.

For Walter I have the 1861 (from the details below I have got the original
page) and the 1871 in Yorkshire (also on original page). He died before the
1881.

I hope it is not asking to much after all the help you have given me but
could you see if Walter is on the 1851 census this will just tie up the
loose ends for me and then I can illiminate the census records from my
research (unless of course the 1841 census is available for this area ???)
Do you have the original census images or just a transcription? If you have
the original images I would be extremely grateful if you could email me the
images for both Martha and Walter (if you can find him).

I am so, so, glad they have not turned out to be siblings, but I suppose
they still could end up being cousins - it all depends how common a surname
Griffiths was in the area at that time, I shall have to try and find a way
of tracing James and John further back.

Once again thanks for your help - this area of the country is a bit new to
my research so I have very little data on it yet but it seems I will have to
expand on that very soon if I am to extend this family.

Hello Kevin,

I think you can sleep well tonight! The 1871 census says Walter GRIFFITHS
was born in Gospel Oak. I believe that's in the Tipton area. She must have
married this one...
