In answer to this question - I don't think there are very many records of those who came back.

I think, as in my own case last year, I just folded my tent, bought my ticket and here I am. No customs officer asked whether I was going to stay in this Country, they looked at my passport and stamped it that I couldn't work in this country, where I was born, and home I came. There were no questions asked, no forms to fill out, etc. However, I did not get an overweight baggage allowance to bring my "stuff" back - so officially I suppose I am still a foreigner.

I had been living in Ontario, Canada for 32 years - since 1973.

My reason for my return: Homesickness and a very "old" "sick" mother.

I was born in Herefordshire, however, I went "kicking and screaming" with my first husband to live in Canada.
In 1973 and previous to that I should think, one went where one's husband took them - whether one liked it or not. He wanted a better life - he wanted to get away from "my" family - He is still there living in Canada. My daughter, who also went to Canada with us, came back here with her children many years ago and is staying here. One of my sons stayed in Canada - having been born in England. We are all contended with where we have decided to live. Two over there - two back here in the UK.

I shall be returning as usual at Christmastime for my usual visit to my "darling other family" (children of my second husband) whom I have left out there - they are Canadian thru and thru.

I don't know if this was usually the case "no questions asked" or whether most women felt Homesick when they lived in another country or not, but that is my case stated.

Sorry if I have rambled but I felt that the "reasons for leaving" and "reasons for returning" are probably some of the same reasons that applied in the past.

Doesn't really clear anything up for you though does it?

This thread is particularly interesting to me because my great grandfather
emigrated to America, and his family followed him only to return to England
on his death. Are there any records anywhere about returning emigrants or
immigration into the UK from across the Atlantic, because I have never
managed to find anything.
