In this context a 'Reader' is an individual who reads aloud the scriptures/lessons for the worship service. This role is also referred to as the 'Lector'. 'A lecturer who also took services' does not make sense to me.

Actually, being a non-believer myself, I don't go to church, so I don't
know. However, I did notice in last week's WO that the religious bit was
written by someone who was a "Reader" at St Mary's. Could that be the
same thing as a Lecturer?
