I assume you've checked the censuses, but just in case.
1851 census has Martha aged 48, unmarried, born Arkendale, as housekeeper with John Curry at Markington.
1861 census has Martha aged 56, unmarried, born Arkendale, as head of household, retired servant at King Street Ripon.
1871 census has Martha, aged 68, unmarried, born Arkendale as housekeeper at St Mary's Gate Ripon.
There is a death record, as you say, in 1878 aged 76.
I couldn't find Martha on the 1841 census, but didn't spend too much time. I have not found the children, maybe they died young or were taken on by other people.
The births of the children are on Hugh Wallis website.
No more help, I'm afraid!

Subject: [Harrogate] Hawkes in Arkendale
Hello, I am new to this list.
I am researching a Martha Hawkes born in Arkendale near Knaresborough. She had a son William in 1822 and a daughter Sarah in 1826 when living at Minskip near Aldborough (No father mentioned at baptism). I surmise that she was born about the turn of the 1800s. IGI do not cover Arkendale for that period.
Martha spent the last 30 years of her life in or near Ripon where she died in 1878.
I'd be very grateful to hear from anybody who has come across her or could point me in the right direction.
