Hi List

Articles which might interest many of you......if not please let me know.

Robert Clough started Grove mills, Ingrow in 1818 at first as a rental and
then purchased in 1831( Grove Mills is still in the same place at Ingrow)
His Grandson John was knighted in 1914 and died in 1922 in his 86th year. By
then Cloughs had Mills in Becks Road (Beck Mills) and in Coney Lane. Sir
John's son was Henry who lived at Redholt (now a nursing home on Hainworth
Wood Road) and Percy who lived at The Knowle (now the co-op funeral
directors in Queens Road Keighley. Ingrow was the largest worsted
mill.....Salt's at Saltaire brainchild of Sir Titus Salt with his Model
Village and total abstention from alcohol.may have had more floor
space,,,,,but less spindles. Salt's mill still stands today....and house many
craft outlets....with many David Hockney paintings....well worth a visit.
Saltaire is in between Bingley and Shipley.....and is beautifully situated.

ANother branch of the Cloughs were Sir Robert & Sam Clough. Sir Robert was a
mayor of Keighley and first Conservative M.P. for Keighley 1918 - 1922. He
was originally in he Colonial Combing Company, down Dalton Lane. Then he went
into the Keighley Gas and Oil Engine Company, Dalton Lane.( large mills still
stand in this area ) He went bankrupt (and had to resign his seat in
Parliament) He had to leave Oakworth Court, Station Road, Oakworth- he used
to live at Yew Bank, Skipton Road......but his eldest son was killed cycling
on Skipton Road. and he went to live at Greenbank, Greenhead Lane. He
returned to the wool trade becoming a wool merchant in Bradford. He no longer
had a chaffeur and walked daily from Utley to Keighley Station.
Sam Clough of Steeton Hall was Sir Robert's brother and had Clough's Mill at
Steeton. His daughter Dorothy was prominent in the Girl Guides a movement
with which she workd all he life. Steeton Hall still exists today. All of
the places mentioned are in and around Keighley, West Yorkshire.....see
previous posting for the areas around Keighley.

Hope these names and places are of interest to some of you.

If these are of interest I will post a few per day.

Best Wishes
Jan
