But there were free non-whites in the Northeast US and they are identified as such. I think Mayland had the most free non-whites, but also Michigan, Missouri, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Massachusetts. So, beginning with the 1790 census, look for "free coloreds" section of censuses. The free-white section will have no tallies.

The US did not have a census until 1790. You can't
read slave names
with their adopted surnames until 1870. In the
censuses before 1870 the
amount of slaves were listed along with their ages
only. I would say
seek out the LDS listings to see if England ran any
censuses and what
info was included in them for slaves.

Hello SLAVEINFO Listers:
"I have a Negro slave John Johnson, that was born
about 1760 (I believe in the US) but
ended up in England by (or before) 1808.
It's possible that he was taken to England directly
from Africa. Not sure."
....
Red Flag: John JOHNSTON? Will I be able to find a
Negro slave by the name of John JOHNSTON in the USA
c.1760? Or in England c.1808?
If so, I need guidance.
I am asking for a newbie but this is making me feel
like a newbie also.
Grateful to any and all suggestions/contributions for
our journey.
....
Regards,
--Manaia
