I know my subject opens up a golden opportunity to all with a sense of humor
for a long thread of sarcasm. However, I do have a serious query.

I have a copy of my grandfather's brother's "certified copy of an entry of
birth" from the GRO, London. It shows he was born in "Mill End Chatteris",
Sub-district of "Chatteris", in the "County of Cambridge", in the
registration district of "Witchford". His date of birth was March 14, 1853.
In looking at maps, I find the city of Chatteris, but what does "Mill End"
mean? Is that just a reference to a mill at one end of town, or does it
have a greater significance? Is the city the same as the "Sub-district"? I
found the county alright, but what makes up the district of "Witchford"? Can
anyone e-mail a map showing these entities?

His name was William Scarborough. His father was James Scarborough,
occupation "Baker". His mother's name was Sarah Claridge. How do I go about
finding information on his mother and father? I think James' middle name
was William. James' father was James S. Scarborough.

Were city directories for Chatteris published that far back? Does anyone
have access?

Are there any Scarboroughs or Claridges out there??

Please e-mail to

Thanks in advance!!

Gene
