Hello,
I am seeking information on the ships and families below. Since the PAYNE's
I am interested in lived in England/Ireland/Virginia/Maryland, and they
were also mariners, I am posting this to several lists hoping someone will
recognize the ships or the names as they are all closely associated.
ships:
JOHN & DOROTHY
ELIZABETH
The JOHN & DOROTHY was captained by at least 2 PAYNE's- Thomas PAYNE in
1636 and John PAYNE in 1638.
I also know that the JOHN & DOROTHY were involved in transporting Adam
THOROUGHGOOD and others to Virginia in 1634, according to patents granted
to Thoroughgood in that year. Included in that patent (see Cavaliers and
Pioneers, vol. 1) were John REYNOLDS, and John WITHERS, who is listed as
servant of John PAYNE in other records in the year 1641. John PAYNE and
John WITHERS were then residing in Dublin, Ireland and they apparently made
frequent calls at Galway- where John PAYNE was also jailed for about a year
prior. This was the result of his porting in Galway about 1638, where he
sold cargo claimed to be the property of one of the ships co-owners, Joseph
HAWES & Co., who claim no knowledge and gave no authorization for John
PAYNE to port in Ireland as he was directed to return to London from
Virginia. They also accused John PAYNE of having loaded the cargo in
Maryland instead of Virginia as directed. Mr. HAWES had John PAYNE jailed
after his arrival in Galway. John REYNOLDS was later an executor of the
will of Thomas PAINE (PAYNE) of St. Mary's County, Maryland in 1673.
ELIZABETH had George PAYNE as master when she was captured by the Spanish
sometime around 1640. Joseph HAWES (same as above) petitioned the courts
for reprisals against the Spanish ship "SANTA CLARA" and her part in the
demise of the ELIZABETH.
That's about all I know at this point. I have some film coming which will
give further details, but if anyone is familiar with these ships or men,
please contact me.
Other names associated with these men: John MARTIN, Henry & Giles BULLOCKE,
William & Edward PRESTON, Richard, John & Francis LEE,
Henry FLEETE, Henry SPEEDE, Thomas COLE, John, Christopher JAMES, James and
Isaac MERRITT, James TAYLOR, John JENNINGS
most of these names are associated with the LONDON COMPANY as either
adventurers or merchants. Many of which stand out in history but I've only
located scant pieces of information on them so far. The rest of these men
were mariners- but they can all be regularly found together in records, be
they business records to land patents. The families intermarried and in
some cases, are found with each other over the next century or more. They
were also responsible for transporting other family members of their
associates to the colonies.
Other ships include: DILLIGENT, SUSAN & ELLEN, HOPEWELL, TRANSPORT, LONG
TAYLE, FIREFLY, HMS OXFORD, EMITY
Thank you,
Patrick Payne
