Dear Clem,
Thank you for sending me the list of contacts researching Mison names. I
will certainly get into contact with them, and am very grateful to you.
You asked about Robert Missen who married Phoebe Hobbs on 31 July 1842 in
Stetchworth., born about 1823.
YES, I do have a Robert who seems to fit your bill, and if he's the right
one, it does solve a small problem for me.
The Robert I have was baptised in Soham on 13 July 1823, and was the son of
Robert Mison and his wife Ann Eve. To date I have got back one generation
earlier than that, to Robert (b 1823)'s grandfather. This family tree is
very much in the course of development, and I have about 100 individuals on
it so far. I don't know how much you want to know, so come back if you
want some more.
All I know specifically about Robert is that he is the second child and
first son of Robert and Ann, and that he died on 6 August 1845, so just 22
years of age. He is listed in the Soham burials. No idea what he did, as
I have not yet found the 1841 Census. However, his father and 1 brother
were agricultural labourers, and the other brother was a cordwainer - a
high class bootmaker. The other 5 children were girls. Incidentally,
Soham is about 12 miles from Stetchford.
Now, I mentioned that you might have solved a small problem. It is this.
In the 1851 Census for Fordham (next village to Soham) Ann Eve, now
widowed, is shown living with her sister, niece, daughter Caroline and son
Job, and a granddaughter called Emily. The man who gave me that Census
info said that Emily was born in 1842, and I have always thought that she
must have been the daughter of Ann's eldest daughter (baptised Dec 1821 or
her eldest son baptised July 1823) . So, it looks as if she was Robert's
daughter, and went to live with grandma. There is no Phoebe Mison in the
local census for 1851. I've seen the graveyard burial records, and there's
no Phoebe there either, though that part of the alphabet is missing from
the record. (Noone between Matthew Mison and Walter Mison, and there
definitely should be).
Incidentally the spellings around that time are a bit variable, and I think
I have seen Robert senior's name spelled Missen, though Robert senior's dad
spelled it Myson and from mid-19th century it is Mison.
I'll be fascinated if there's any more you can tell me, and to know if you
think we have made a correct connection.
All the best,
Gill Dishart (nee Mison)
Derby, England.
