If he was a master, i.e. he practiced his trade in his own name, not
just worked for someone he would have to have his mark registered at
the 'local' goldsmith's hall. Of the halls that existed in the mid
18th century only two (London and Edinburgh) are still in business
today. This means that records of masters at halls which have closed
are patchy. The best place to contact is
