Martin,
Thanks to you and to Robin Drayton, for the info on the web-sites which
cover the history of Soham. Both were very interesting. The information
on poverty and poor relief was particularly sad. Romantic rural idyll it
certainly was not. It was difficult to believe that 500 people were
living in filth and deprivation in a quarry pit in Isleham in the early
1800's.
Can you or anyone say where the information about the administration of
poor relief in Soham in 1833 can be found, please? Evidently the group
which studied and put togethe the book "Village History in the Staploe
Hundred" must have seen the original documents. Does Cambridge CRO have
them for viewing, perhaps?
