Over the past several decades the LDS has microfilmed parish registers when
they were given permission. Once they were filmed, volunteers extracted
the baptisms and marriages and they were put on the IGI. Each entry
extracted was then checked for accuracy by 2 additional people. If you
look closely at the IGI you will see that most extracted entries only go to
about 1840 (1837 being the start of civil registration).

The head of my local FHC tells me that deaths will soon be going on the IGI
but whether or not that will be retroactive, I don't know. Although many
parishes in Northants are now available on microfiche from the LDS, it is
not known whether the church will also go back and extract these.
Church members are still doing extractions, much of the current work is in
American records.

This may seem like a silly question, but why can't I find
any of my known CAWTHORN forebears on the IGI Internet
site?
i.e. all the ones born in and around the Christchurch/Upwell
area from 1800 onwards.

I know you have to double check the IGI entries, but a large
part of the Cambs/Norfolk border seems to be missing!
