The Loyalists fled from the U.S. to Canada as the Americans burned their
farms and homes and tarred and feathered them as traitors if they continued
to
pledge allegiance to Britain. They were safe in Canada as we had repelled
the American invasion in 1812 and remained under British control. I believe
there are some in the U.S. too, though. I suspect some who did not want to
lose
their farms and everything they owned just kept a low profile.

My daughter is just studying this in school - it isn't much studied in the
U.S. from
what I gather as my American relatives and friends do not have much
knowledge of it. They like the Boston tea party better. Of course, we're
all
sympathetic to that, being about those high British taxes and all.

I do have a CD on confederate soldiers from 1861-65 if anyone wants a lookup
on relatives who emigrated to America and may have in the civil war.

> About Canadians and American Independence. Pat, since you are a Canadian
(I
think) do you know anything about a group called United Empire Loyalists? I
have just learned of this group and wonder if they have an American
equivalent.
