Do not forget that the next day was All Fools Day!
Frustrating is it not?
Did grandfather have an unusual given name? Do you know where he was
born?

If so, try and trace him by just inputting his given name and place (or
county) of
birth, you may be lucky!
If you are sure that they were alive in 1881 and 1901, I suggest that
you check the 1891 census, this may give you a pointer or two. The 1891
census for the London area is now available on CD-ROM.
Adrian

p.s I can only suggest some names may have not been correctly recorded
for the following reasons:
1) The man had a peripatetic job; Ag Lab, traveller, tinker, merchant
seaman,
fisherman etc or of no fixed abode.
2) The man was living in an institution e.g workhouse, hostel, school,
ship, prison
etc and may have been missed by an over-worked enumerator.
3) The man was in Scotland or Ireland on census night.
4) The man was serving with HM Forces abroad, Ireland, India, Egypt etc.
5) The man had changed his surname or his name was incorrectly recorded.
6) The man had spent census night at his girlfriend's house and was not
recorded by the enumerator!
7) The man could have emigrated and then returned to the UK after April
1901, this did happen!
