Subject: [FENS] Missing males in 1901
Date: Thu, 14 Nov 2002 04:04:06 EST

Dear All
I contacted the census help desk regarding the missing males in my family. I
received the folowing reply, which is not especially helpful. However I
concede that there will be many mistakes so I guess it's remarkable what they
have managed to achieve.

"Thankyou for contacting the Census Helpdesk. I had similar difficulties
locating the people in question so they must have been mistranscribed. I
would advise you try to locate the family and see what they all would have
been mistranscribed as.

We have made every attempt to ensure that entries are correct but due to
problems reading the 1901 script, damaged images and sheer volume of data
transcribed, mistakes may occur.

Often what may be perceived as an incorrect entry is in fact a 1901 error,
that is, an error in the original 1901 data rather than our transcription. If
you do spot errors, use the online `Census Data Amendment` form under
`Contact Us` to relay any corrections to us.

I hope this helps, I wish you the best of luck searching. Lastly could you
tell me the address of the forum with Census debates?"

Thank you to those who have sent me suggestions. I'm afraid most of the
solutions do not apply- overnighting with girlfriends is of course possible,
although given that one of the said gentlemen was a bishop I think (hope!)
it's unlikely!

Caroline
