It seems that the PRs of Shepreth are completely inaccessible unless you are
able to visit the CRO so I am appealing to list subscribers ...

I am trying to sort out my GATES ancestors in Shepreth. My gggranny was Ann
GATES, daughter of James and Sarah GATES, baptised at Shepreth 18 May 1823
with her sister, Eliza. I know that there were siblings William (c 1817),
Sarah (c 1838), Humphrey (c 1839), Susan (c 1846), Keziah (c 1846) and
Samuel (c 1848). I have no marriage date for parents James and Sarah DEAR
(her surname is on the IGI baptism record) and I haven't a clue when either
of the parents were baptised.

I have found another Humphrey GATES baptised 28 May 1758 at Meldreth and
married to Mary WILSON at Meldreth 4 Jan 1784. I have one son, William,
baptised to them 14 Jan 1787 at Shepreth (PR transcript printouts from LDS).
This Humphrey GATES was buried at Shepreth in 1822 (burial index lookup done
by someone else). The coincidence of the forenames leads me to assume some
family relationship.

Anyone out there know anything about this GATES family or have access to the
Shepreth registers who can give me any insight into this family. Any crumbs
gratefully accepted.
