John was tried in Cambridge 16 March 1789 and given a 7 year sentence.
He was transported to New South Wales per "Matilda", arriving there 1
August, 1791.
He enlisted in the New South Wales Corps 23 December 1801, and served in
the penal settlement of Newcastle between 1806 and 1808.
On 24 April 1810 he enlisted in the 73rd Regiment and did not return to
England with the NSW Corps (now the 102nd Regiment). During his time
with the 73rd he did another tour of duty in Newcastle.

Seeking further information about John, especially his early life in
Cambridgeshire, for an ongoing project on Newcastle's first twenty years
and the people who spent time there.
