Capt. Stephen Bess Enyart led the Arkansas Volunteers in the Mexican War,
1846-1848.
They fought no battles, but saw picket duty in the area between Monterey
and the Rio Grande River.

He was a Capt in Co. G, 1st Batt., 20th Regiment, under Col. A.V. Rieff,
until that Reg. was reorganized as Confederate, then he joined Co. G, 17th
Reg., Griffith's Union Infantry. He was
"bushwacked", killed by a mini-ball near his home in Washington Co., AR, so
the family story goes, and that Hanna carried his remains home in a
wheelbarrow. I have been given both 1864 and 1866 as his date of death,
and three locations of his burial, so more research is needed in this area.

The Muster Roll of Rieff's Confederate Regiment included this description
of Pvt. James Enyart, brother of Stephen, "age 37, 6-0 tall, fair
complexion, blue eyes, auburn hair".

Humphrey Enyart, b. July 22, 1838, eldest son of Stephen Bess Enyart and
Hanna Narcissa Trammell served in the Confederate Army as a 3rd Sargeant,
Co. K, 35th Arkansas Infantry
from June 19,1862 till killed Jan. 7, 1863.

This truly was a war that tore families apart!
