Subject: [ESSEX-BOOKS] Newburyport Stuff - Hoax
Date: Sat, 25 Mar 2000 05:52:20 -0500

The other day I received a message from a Michael Johnson in California
which I interpreted as a "come-on" to sell some Essex County material. I
get many offers like that and have, I guess, become quite cynical : >)

I forwarded it to these lists in order to alert you to a potential hoax.

I WAS WRONG!!!

I spoke to this gentleman Friday (3/24) and his only interest is in gaining
knowledge on the family involved (Bradbury).

His message to me is repeated (again) below. If anyone can help him with
the Bradburys, he would sincerely appreciate it.

Sorry for "shooting from the hip,"

Bob

I am using a friends email so don't respond to this email. My email is at
the end of this correspondence. I am very pleased to have found you. I hope
the feeling will be mutual when you hear what I have. Over twenty years ago
I purchased an old trunk in Southern California that had over 200 items
including ships logs from the 1600's. Many diaries too. Unfortunately I had
to sell many of the items to a museum because I was single and needed the
money for school. The items were from Newburyport,Mass. One diary was a
goldmining diary from Downieville,Calif. during the goldrush(1855-56). I
visited Downieville and cross referenced the three jury trials my writer
writes about in these diaries and one name came up three times-Ebenezer
Bradbury. I believe the owners ,at one time, of the trunk was the Bradbury
family. When I purchased it from a dealer those twenty years ago I tried to
contact the Newburyport newspaper to have them help me notify family. I
wrote to the paper but never heard anything back. Here the other day I
found an email address and wrote a lengthy email to the Newburyport paper
thinking I might now get a response but again I have heard nothing. I still
have several documents I didn't sell including the first handwriten U.S.
Census (1790) for Essex,County My name is Michael Johnson my email address
is or (209) 551-6017 I hope to hear from you
