----------------------------- SUPPLEMENT -------------------------------------
I promised this supplement in the September issue of Essex-Roots. It is
both a little history and a call for volunteers.
Back in 1996, when USGenWeb was formed , the Essex County , MA page had a
host. After months of no activity,
James Streeter and your editor, approached George Waller,
USGenWeb Massachusetts State Coordinator and requested that the page be
considered abandoned. In January 1997, James and I became co-coordinators
of the Essex
County USGenWeb Project.
We were, along with a group of others, members of the "Rowley-Roots"
mailing list. That list was growing and had begun to encompassed queries
etc. for all of Essex County, so we proposed to Mariana Ruggles, (then, as
now) listowner, that the name be changed to Essex-Roots. This was a
beginning step in attempting to integrate genealogy resources in Essex
County. Over the years, Essex-Roots, the mailing list became MAEssex-L and
the old Essex-Roots-L became a vehicle for distributing a monthly
newsletter. The saga of how that happened is a long story in itself.
Recently, a major change has come about in Essex County GenWeb - I lost my
partner. After years of doing the bulk of the maintenance work on Essex
County, James Streeter has decided to work on genealogy - a novel idea : >)
He will still be around in the background to help as needed, but the writer
now has the "whole enchilada."
For those who are unfamiliar with Essex GenWeb, there are 34 towns/cities
in Essex County and currently we have 22 town pages up and running,
hopefully providing a wealth of genealogical information for our fellow
Essex researchers.
They are:

All of the town pages can be reached from the county page which is:
http://www.essexcountyma.org/
If you go to the county page and click on towns, you will see that the
'hosted" pages are hosted by names that most Essex genealogists are
familiar with.
What do we need?
We need help!
It has always been our goal to have a page for EVERY town. We're at about
2/3's right now. Three adoptable towns are almost "turnkey" pages. Just
find a server to put the page on and we'll provide the files or in two
cases let you take over the site on the existing server... you'll be an
instant Web Master.
Getting a town "up and running" takes a few hours work at the very
beginning but once it is up, it almost runs itself. You are only limited by
time and your creativity. There are a few ground rules but they are quite
simple.
To get a "feel" for what it takes, go to the Essex County HELP page at:
http://www.essexcountyma.org/essexhlp/
What do you get?
The daily satisfaction that you are helping other genealogists find
information, resources etc. in the town of your forefathers... who could
ask for more?
Join us and start making a contribution now... all the "free" stuff on the
web is because folks like our dedicated volunteers put it there.
Thanks for listening.
Bob
