this offer is STRICTLY LIMITED to those who have sent me information on
their Essex Emigrant Families
On Saturday 5 October, I am hoping to visit the Public Record Office
at Kew. Anyway, as a way of saying thank you to people who have sent me
information on their Essex Emigrant Families for my Project, I would
like to offer to look-up two indexes for you. These Indexes are:
(1) Index of British Army Soldiers discharged to pension 1780s to 1852.
Remember that thousands upon thousands of Irish men were in the British
Army. This Index contains the following information:
Name of soldier, place of birth, year enlisted, year discharged,
regiment.
The advantage of looking at this index is that you will discover
whether the Attestation Papers or the Discharge Papers for your ancestor
soldier are available to be researched or photocopied. I won't have
time to research or photocopy the documents but, if you know they exist,
you might want one day to have someone do the task for you.
(2) Index of British Army Soldiers who survived World War I
This Index is very incomplete. During World War II most of the records
of the soldiers of World War I were destroyed during the air-raid
bombing. What survives has been divided into two lots -
part 1: the unburnt material. All of this has been indexed.
part 2: the burnt material. The only parts which have been indexed
are surnames beginning with
the letters E, N, O, Q, U, V, Z.
The advantage of looking at this index is that you will discover whether
the army record of your ancestor who fought in World War I is available
for researching & photocopying at this present time. It does not give
much information but, if you know that it exists, you might want to have
someone research & photocopy this for you at a later date.
If you would like to look up either or both or these Indexes, please
e-mail me with the following details:
name of man
likely year of birth & likely place of birth

Jean
