SUBJECT #2 The World Beyond Essex
Hello Jean,
I heard you from afar. Compliments! The squeaking wheel usually gets the
oil, besides considering your past efforts, you are most deserving,
squeaking or not.
In helping German/Americans in the USA, many are shocked to learn they are
indeed not of German, but rather of Austrian/Czech heritage, i.e. the
Sudetenlands of Bohemia and Moravia. The Artist family I am researching,
the famous watercolorist BRUHL OF ENGLISH fame, has roots deep in the
Bukovina (Romania, the Ukraine, parts of Poland, etc...,, places people
went 'from', rather than 'to' as with, Canada, America, Australia...., and
little Essex.
And yes.., there is indeed a BUKOVINA List, run by someone's ggg grandchild
in upstate New York (USA) at Cornell University. This obvious point for any
'genealogy-disrespecting' spouse: Genealogy leads to culture, to history,
to geography, to languages, even to smaller, local museums of Scarsborough
fame. Genealogy is just another type of school (for big kids).
When I read "Perrin" yesterday, I thought, 'French'; and Penning,
Austrian/German/Czech.
German Tel. has the following:
PERRIN - ca 70+- listings. Among them are several French-sounding Christian
names: Jean-Pierre, Jean-Luc, Emlie, etc. (I did not look in France/Belgium.)
PENNING - 420+- listings (I did not check out Austria/Switzerland/The
Czech Republic/Hungary.)
Personal experience (am not a professional researcher) for searching the
non-famous, has favored MY own phone calls/letters, rather than expecting
help from outside, i.e. help without myself intruding first. However, over
15 years, distant cousins have begun contacting ME, bringing their trails
of research (connecting g. great grandparents) with them.
My suggestion: try the Continental Europeans for roots beyond (if
interested). English, thanks to you folks (via either good manners or guns)
is the international language; you need not put off writing. If a recipient
can't read your words, a neighbor or grandchild can help.
I'll guess by Sunday pm, Jean you'll have had more than enough 'help'.
cst
