It is I again Joanne,
The wool industry fell of gradually until the late C16. Then about
200Flemish refugees from the persecution of Philip of Spain and the Duke
of Alva crossed over to Colchester in 1571. Later some of them
migratedto Halstead and by their ideas and drive gave a new impetus to
the clothing industry. For atime NE Essex became actively
industrial.Colchester the centre fro serge cloths known as bays and
says. This manufacture was carried on at
Coggeshall,BOCKING,BRAINTREE,Halstead,Dedham also at Witham,KELVEDON and
DUNMOW. Again caps are search towns.
It may be that my forbears came in the second lot cos 1 branch of the
family says that they came due to the Catholic persecution.
4.On my visit for 3 days to ERO in June last year, I could not push
back past 1741 with most of the relatives based on Felsted, although
several lines have not been pursued.
5.At ERO one of the archivists was very helpful and told me that early
on there were a lot of HURRELL and variants in Ardleigh and Ardleigh
?[can't remember] but they are quite near the coast. She also on my last
afternoon brought up a document spoecially from the stacks
I digress here and say that a Blazon of Arms was preparedfor the Hurrell
family by The Historical Research centre sic.I couold not afford the
money the College of Arms wanted to investigate. The shield was-"Argent,
a chevron between three crossbows unbent azure"
The document from the stack was a roughing out and then a full sketch
exactly the same as described above. It was made for a Hurel of
Havering. No other info was on it. My Heraldic Artist in NZ had drawn up
the whole thing including the Crest .The only error was that the
crossbows(arbalests) were palewise and not fesswise.I'm not claiming
descent from a knight(after all most of the 19C were Ag labs and
basket-weavers) I wonder at what time this was and if thisdid not mean
that there were French Flemings as well.
I'm fair wrote out. I've really enjoyed sorting things out but it does
get frustrating asyou all know.
