Hi Libby,

I'm sure people know more about the Workhouse than I do, but my grandmother
died there in 1953 (by which time it was St Peter's Hospital). She was the
oldest resident and I have a pic of her meeting the mayor. I have a photo
of the building (1971) which I can scan and send if you wish. "Maldon - a
Pictorial History" says this:

The Union Workhouse was built in 1872-3 at a cost of 21,500 pounds, was
designed to accommodate 350 inmates, and the facilities included an
infirmary block. It replaced the old Union Workhouse in Market Hill, built
1836, which was converted into 'convenient dwelling houses'. Under the Local
Government act 1929 the Guardians of the Poor were dissolved and poor relief
became a county responsibility. In April 1930 the Workhouse became a Public
Assistance Institute known as St Peter's Hospital and casual relief was
given to the poor and needy until 1939. On 5th July 1948 it became St
Peter's Hospital under the control of the Ministry of Health.

Alan

P.S. "UD" means Urban Distrtict (as opposed to "RD", rural district)
